Freedom of expression of cartoonists and journalists: protection and limitations of the right in Greek and Cypriot law
Author(s): Scientific Editors: Spyridon-Heracles Aktypis, Philippe Jougleux, Tatiana-Eleni Synodinou
A year after the terrorist attack to the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo, the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights (MFHR) published a collective volume on the topical topic of freedom of expression of jouranlists and cartoonists. The volume contains ten researches that highlight the current stakes of the protection of freedom of expression at a time when it is threatened and challenged not only by all kinds of fanaticism, intolerance, and religious fundamentalism, but also by governments’ anti-terrorist measures.
This volume examines the various aspects of the legal regime for the protection of the right to freedom of expression and its limitations, both within the Greek and Cypriot law, and in the light of the case-law of the European Court of Human Rights. The book puts a special emphasis on the thorny, yet always topical question on the relationship between freedom of expression and freedom of religion and belief. French Professor of International Law Emmanuel Decaux, President of the UN Committee on Enforced Disappearances prefaces this volume.
