DEMOCRACY AND CIVIC SPACE

The broader topic “Democracy and Civic Space” includes issues  particularly related to civil society, human rights defenders, electoral processes, democratic governance, the digital environment and the impact of artificial intelligence on human rights, freedom of opinion and expression, as well as freedom of assembly and association.

The section “Development and living in dignity” includes, in particular, issues of economic, social and cultural rights, the fight against poverty, environmental protection, tackling climate change and sustainable development.

EQUALITY AND NON-DISCRIMINATION

The principles of equality and non-discrimination constitute two sides of the same coin and they are mostly related with women’s and children’s rights, the fight against racial discrimination and hate speech, as well as the protection of vulnerable groups and categories of the population, such as minorities, migrants and refugees, indigenous peoples, persons with disabilities, persons belonging to the LGBTQI+ community, etc.

This section includes issues relating to the proper administration of justice and the right to a fair trial, the abolition of the death penalty, enforced disappearances and extrajudicial executions, servitude, forced labor and trafficking in human beings, as well as issues relating to torture and other forms of ill-treatment, terrorism and anti-terrorism measures.

PEACE AND SECURITY

This section includes issues such as conflict-prevention, the unlawful use of force and the violation of human rights, genocide, the use of mercenaries, violations of international humanitarian law, but also humanitarian crises, providing humanitarian aid, peacekeeping operations, transitional justice systems, reparations for victims of armed conflict, etc.

PROTECTION SYSTEMS

The institutions, mechanisms and bodies for the protection of human rights at a universal, regional and national level provide the appropriate framework for the monitoring of implementation and States’ effective compliance with their commitments. The said framework includes the relevant procedural rights of natural and legal persons, non-governmental organisations and other groups, such as the right of individual application and the right to petition.
