The Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights (MFHR) organized on 5 November 2024 at 17:00, an event on “Blatant Violations of Human Rights in the World”, at the “Georgios Karantzas” hall, at the ESIEA building.

At a critical juncture of massive and widespread violations of human rights, which threatens to collapse the institutional structure of their international protection, the Marangopoulos Foundation for Human Rights (MFHR) with this event brought to the fore the issue of brutal violations, not only in the context of conflicts that are at the centre of international news (Ukraine, Middle East), but also those that remain in the shadows despite the tragic consequences for millions of our fellow human beings in Africa, Latin America or Asia.

The purpose of the event was to turn the spotlight, at least for a while, on the “forgotten” hotbeds of cruelty. This is not only a moral duty to the victims, but also a response to an urgent need to understand a series of phenomena that are at the root of these brutal violations, including the unprecedented volume of refugee flows. In a globalised society, such phenomena are not ‘alien’ but offend fundamental values and ultimately affect us all directly.

The discussion was moderated by the Vice President of the Marangopoulos Foundation and former UN Deputy Secretary-General, Sotiris Mousouris,

Sotiris Roussos, Professor at the Department of Political Science and International Relations of the University of Peloponnese and Scientific Director of the Centre for Mediterranean – Middle East and Islamic Studies (KEMMIS) at the same University.
