Press Releases,

This event was organised on the occasion of the emblematic case Duarte Agostinho and others v. Portugal and 32 other States brought before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

The head of the applicants’ legal team, Ms. Alison Macdonald KC, Barrister, Essex Court Chambers, was invited. In the subsequent discussion, moderated by the Dean of the Faculty of Law of the NKUA and former President of the ECtHR, Professor Linos-Alexander Sicilianos, also participated Professor Emerita Glykeria Siouti, Professor Maria Gavouneli and Professor George Dellis, from the University of Athens.

The rich academic discussion right after all excellent interventions, highlighted the legal aspects of the Duarte Agostinho case, the first of its kind, as it is brought before the ECtHR by 6 children and young persons from Portugal against thirty-three (33) States, claiming the latter’s failure (all of them being Parties to the 2015 Paris Agreement) to limit the intergenerational and transboundary consequences of climate change.

The President of the Hellenic Council of the State, Ms. Evaggelia Nika, the President of the Supreme Civil and Criminal Court, Ms. Ioanna Klapa, academics, members of environmental and civil society organisations, as well as the general audience, have honored our event with their presence.
